Major tech firms are accelerating efforts to place AI compute in orbit, driven by surging demand for large language model training and inference that strains terrestrial power grids and cooling systems. Nvidia previewed its Vera Rubin Space-1 module at GTC in March 2026 for orbital AI inference using radiation-hardened GPUs, while Google advanced Project Suncatcher with plans for two prototype satellites by early 2027. Startups like Orbital secured launch slots for April 2027 on SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets carrying Nvidia hardware focused on independent inference workloads, and Blue Origin filed for a 51,600-satellite constellation. These moves build on earlier white papers and FCC filings from SpaceX and others exploring solar-powered, passively cooled orbital data centers, though full-scale deployments with at least 100 AI accelerators remain years away amid regulatory and technical hurdles.
