Recent reports of Google and SpaceX exploring orbital AI compute infrastructure have emerged as the key catalyst shaping trader sentiment, building on Google's November 2025 Project Suncatcher announcement for solar-powered satellite constellations running TPUs. Startups like Starcloud have already demonstrated proof-of-concept by training and running large language models such as Gemma on an Nvidia H100 in low-Earth orbit, while Orbital plans a 2027 Falcon 9 launch of its first inference-focused satellite using Nvidia's Vera Rubin Space-1 GPUs. These moves address terrestrial constraints on power and cooling for AI workloads, though challenges around launch economics, radiation hardening, and inter-satellite links remain. Key upcoming milestones include Lonestar's October 2026 StarVault data-storage mission and prototype launches from multiple firms in 2027 that could clarify whether commercial orbital data centers scale beyond testing.
