The closely matched frontrunners at Cannes reflect early critical reception for established auteurs whose competition premieres have generated strong word-of-mouth among industry voters. Andrey Zvyagintsev’s Minotaur and Cristian Mungiu’s Fjord lead with slight edges over Pawel Pawlikowski’s Fatherland, driven by their directors’ prior Palme successes and precise storytelling styles that align with the festival’s preference for auteur-driven drama. Lukas Dhont and László Nemes sit just behind, benefiting from emotional intensity and visual ambition that could sway the jury chaired by Park Chan-wook. With screenings continuing through the final weekend, late reviews and audience reactions remain key swing factors that could shift momentum before the May 23 announcement.
