Friedrich Merz has served as Chancellor of Germany since May 6, 2025. This market will resolve to the next individual, other than Friedrich Merz, who assumes the office of Chancellor of Germany. To count for resolution, the individual must be elected Chancellor by the Bundestag and appointed by the Federal President. Any acting or caretaker Chancellor will not count toward the resolution of this market. If no such Chancellor takes office, or if Friedrich Merz is the next individual elected Chancellor, by December 31, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, this market will resolve to “No Next Chancellor before 2028”. The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from the Bundestag and the Federal Government of Germany; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.**Recent state election setbacks have intensified pressure on Chancellor Friedrich Merz, whose approval ratings have fallen to historic lows around 10-14 percent amid AfD gains and economic dissatisfaction.** The CDU's weak performance in Saxony-Anhalt (September 6) and expectations for further losses in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (September 20) have fueled open discussion of a "Kanzlertausch" within the CDU/CSU, with North Rhine-Westphalia's Hendrik Wüst and Bavaria's Markus Söder positioned as the leading internal alternatives in trader pricing. A grand coalition with the SPD adds procedural and political hurdles to any rapid leadership shift before the 2029 election, while national polls showing the AfD ahead sustain uncertainty about broader stability. These factors keep probabilities fragmented across multiple names, including SPD's Boris Pistorius, reflecting the absence of a clear successor consensus and the possibility that Merz could weather the immediate tests or that no change occurs before 2028.
