The record of 18 yellow cards in a single World Cup match, set during the 2022 Netherlands-Argentina quarterfinal, stands as a significant outlier driven by intense physical play and limited intervention. In the expanded 2026 tournament, traders assign a 92% implied probability that this mark holds because modern refereeing protocols, including VAR reviews and stricter foul management, reduce the likelihood of prolonged escalations into mass bookings. Early group-stage fixtures have featured occasional red cards but far fewer cumulative yellows, reflecting improved player discipline and tactical caution. Yellow-card reset rules after the group stage and quarterfinals further discourage accumulation-heavy games, while the broader field of 48 teams dilutes opportunities for the exact high-stakes, heated matchups needed to challenge the benchmark.
