**Scientific consensus from the USGS and seismological data establishes that a magnitude 10.0 earthquake is physically impossible on Earth.** Earthquake magnitude scales with fault rupture length and slip; no known fault is long enough to release the required energy—roughly equivalent to a fault spanning much of the planet's circumference. The largest recorded event reached 9.5 in Chile's 1960 Valdivia quake along a ~1,000 km subduction zone, with all subsequent great events (such as the 9.2 Alaska 1964 and 9.1–9.2 Sumatra 2004) falling well below 10.0. In the brief window remaining before 2027, recent global monitoring shows only moderate activity, with 2026 events peaking around 7.7–7.8. Market-implied odds near 99% reflect this established geophysical limit rather than forecast uncertainty, though traders recognize that any future revision in maximum-magnitude scaling laws could theoretically reopen debate.

The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/browse/significant.php#sigdef).
If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until January 31, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that date, another credible resolution source will be used.
After a qualifying earthquake is registered, this market will remain open for 24 hours to account for any revisions to its recorded magnitude. After 24 hours, this market will resolve according to the latest provided data.
