Kei Nishikori, the 36-year-old former world No. 4 and 2014 US Open runner-up who plans to retire at season's end, faces 20-year-old countryman Rei Sakamoto in the final round of US Open qualifying on hard courts. Nishikori advanced with straight-set wins over Sebastian Ofner and teenager Michael Antonius, showing improved aggression and serving despite his long injury history. Sakamoto, ranked around No. 157 with a career high of 148, also posted straight-set victories over Jay Clarke and Alexandre Muller while displaying strong serving and baseline consistency. The pair have no prior competitive head-to-head but have practiced together frequently. Nishikori's vast Grand Slam experience and motivation for a potential main-draw farewell contrast with Sakamoto's higher current ranking and youth, creating a matchup where recent qualifying form and physical freshness will heavily influence the outcome.
