Federal prosecutors indicted the Southern Poverty Law Center in April 2026 on 11 counts of wire fraud, false statements to a bank, and conspiracy to commit money laundering, alleging the organization misused over $3 million in donor funds from 2014–2023 to pay informants inside extremist groups without disclosure. A superseding indictment followed in June, and a second superseding indictment on August 11 added an individual defendant and charges. The SPLC pleaded not guilty, moved to dismiss on vindictive prosecution grounds tied to its prior legal challenges against the administration, and faces trial in Alabama federal court beginning October 5. Traders assign roughly even odds to a guilty finding by year-end amid these pretrial motions, procedural developments, and standard evidentiary burdens in complex nonprofit fraud cases.
