Rublev enters this US Open first-round hard-court matchup as the clear favorite, holding a 24 ranking to Cilic’s 81 and a 27-16 record in 2026 against the veteran’s 14-15. The Russian leads their head-to-head 4-3 overall and 3-1 on hard, where their prior meetings have often gone the distance. Cilic, now 37, posted mixed results on hard this summer, including early exits in Montreal and Cincinnati, though he retains Grand Slam pedigree from earlier career wins over Rublev. Recent form and ranking edge position Rublev to advance in best-of-five sets, though Cilic’s experience and occasional tiebreak strength could extend the contest on the faster New York courts.
