Learner Tien and Tommy Paul, both Americans, meet in the third round of the National Bank Open on outdoor hard courts in Montreal, with Tien entering as the higher-ranked player near No. 19 after a bye and a three-set win over Gael Monfils. Paul, ranked in the low 20s, secured his first post-Wimbledon victory by defeating Valentin Royer in straight sets. Their only prior meeting came in the Delray Beach semifinals earlier in 2026, where Paul rallied from a set down to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 on the same surface. Tien’s strong 2026 form includes a title and consistent results, while Paul brings experience and tactical variety that neutralized Tien’s offensive baseline game before. The matchup remains closely contested given both players’ recent hard-court results and comparable rankings.
