The 2026–27 2. Bundesliga runner-up market reflects an unusually open field behind runaway title favorite VfL Wolfsburg, who enter as clear promotion frontrunners after relegation from the Bundesliga. A large group of clubs—ranging from recently relegated sides like 1. FC Heidenheim and FC St. Pauli to ambitious returnees such as 1. FC Nürnberg, Hertha BSC, Hannover 96, and Holstein Kiel—sit within a narrow band of implied probability. Early matchday results have shown typical second-division volatility, with no single challenger establishing consistent dominance. Depth in squad quality, varying pre-season preparations, and the league’s history of tight promotion battles keep the contest for second place highly competitive through the opening weeks.
