Tomas Etcheverry, currently ranked No. 31 and a former top-25 player, enters the US Open first-round matchup against No. 69 Vit Kopriva as the clear favorite based on ranking, Grand Slam experience, and a prior head-to-head win. The pair met in the 2026 Rio Open semifinal on clay, where Etcheverry rallied from a set down to prevail 4-6, 7-6(2), 7-6(4). Etcheverry captured his maiden ATP title at that Rio event but has posted mixed hard-court results this summer, including a first-round loss in Cincinnati amid a recent skid. Kopriva, a right-hander with a career-high ranking of No. 55, brings a balanced 18-18 record in 2026 and strong baseline consistency, though he lacks deep hard-court major runs. The hard-court surface at Flushing Meadows favors Etcheverry’s power and reach advantage.
