Houthi threats to shutter the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, escalated in mid-April 2026 amid U.S.-Iran tensions under President Trump, drive trader caution in this prediction market, where the leading outcome—"by September 30"—trades at a modest 21% implied probability, reflecting skepticism over full closure despite rhetoric. Ongoing disruptions since 2023 have slashed Red Sea traffic by over 50%, forcing Cape of Good Hope rerouting that propelled the Baltic Dry Index to 3,189 points on May 13—up 152% year-over-year—and spiked container freight rates 300% on Asia-Europe routes. Crude oil benchmarks like Brent have rebounded 5-10% on recent volatility, underscoring the strait's role in 4-12% of seaborne oil flows. Traders eye U.S. naval responses, Gulf state alignments, and Houthi strike escalations as pivotal catalysts ahead of summer shipping peaks.
