The close split between Don Mattingly (32.5%) and Alex Cora (29.6%) as leading candidates for the Phillies' next manager stems from the team's strong resurgence since Mattingly took over as interim skipper on April 28 following Rob Thomson's dismissal. Mattingly's willingness to commit long-term, combined with the club's improved results and his bench-coach familiarity, has elevated his standing with president Dave Dombrowski. Cora remains prominent due to prior interest from Dombrowski earlier in the year, even after initially declining, while longer-shot options like Brandon Hyde reflect broader speculation around experienced MLB managers. With no permanent hire announced heading into late August, trader consensus highlights the uncertainty around a final decision.
