The Pittsburgh Pirates (64-69) visit the San Diego Padres (71-61) for the second game of a three-game series at Petco Park on August 25, with Paul Skenes (9-11, 3.95 ERA) starting against Michael King (8-9, 3.38 ERA). The Padres sit second in the NL West and remain in the wild-card mix despite multiple rotation injuries, including to Joe Musgrove, Lucas Giolito, and Nick Pivetta, while the Pirates occupy fourth place in the NL Central and trail the wild-card line by several games. Pittsburgh snapped a three-game skid with a 3-2, 12-inning victory the previous night behind strong relief work, though both clubs carry recent inconsistencies in run production and bullpen reliability. Home-field advantage and the Padres’ stronger overall record shape trader consensus around a narrow favorite edge for San Diego.
