Recent bilateral talks between Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, including a September 16, 2026, call on sanctions relief implementation and economic cooperation, reflect accelerating normalization after the 2024 regime change and U.S. sanctions easing. A large U.S. business delegation visited Damascus in mid-September to explore investment in energy, transport, and finance, following the removal of Syria’s state sponsor of terrorism designation. U.S. planning for a phased embassy reopening, first notified to Congress in February 2026, continues amid Syrian offers of logistical facilitation, though Washington cites its own security and operational standards as prerequisites. Visa processing remains handled from Amman and Beirut, with no full resumption of operations in Damascus reported. These steps shape trader views on timelines for formal diplomatic restoration.

This market will resolve to "Yes" if the U.S. government announces the reopening of its embassy in Damascus or if such a reopening is otherwise confirmed by 11:59 PM ET on the specified date. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No".
An official announcement made within this market’s timeframe will qualify for a "Yes" resolution regardless of whether an actual embassy opening subsequently takes place within the timeframe.
Any opening of a U.S. embassy in Damascus will qualify regardless of its exact location.
Announcements that do not clearly commit to opening an embassy, such as general diplomatic statements, exploratory comments, or partial/conditional steps, will not count.
The resolution source will be official statements from the Governments of the U.S. and Syria; however, a consensus of credible reporting will also be used.
