This market will resolve to "Yes" if a referendum on Alberta's independence from Canada is passed by December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No". Any referendum that establishes Alberta's desire for independence, sets a framework for independence, or establishes independence from Canada will qualify. The primary resolution source for this market is official information from the government of Alberta, however a consensus of credible reporting will also be used.Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s United Conservative government has scheduled an October 19, 2026, provincial referendum that asks voters whether Alberta should remain in Canada or begin the constitutional process toward a future binding independence vote. Recent polling shows consistent majority opposition to advancing separation, with support for the pro-process option ranging from 19% in Ipsos surveys to 33% in the most recent Angus Reid result. Legal challenges from First Nations over consultation requirements have delayed a citizen-initiated petition route, while the government’s ten-question ballot frames related issues around provincial powers within Confederation rather than outright secession. These factors, combined with economic integration concerns and limited committed separatist backing, underpin traders’ strong consensus against an independence vote occurring this year.
