Venus Williams, a 46-year-old seven-time Grand Slam champion receiving a main-draw wild card, faces Irina-Camelia Begu in the Bad Homburg Open first round on grass. Williams enters with an extended singles losing streak, including straight-sets defeats at the 2026 Madrid Open and earlier events, while ranked outside the top 450. Begu, 35 and ranked around 213, holds a more recent win in qualifying and brings greater consistency despite limited 2026 results. The grass surface favors Williams' serve and historical strengths at Wimbledon warm-ups, yet her age and recent form create significant hurdles against a fit, lower-ranked opponent. The matchup occurs June 22 as the tournament prepares players for Wimbledon.
