Grigor Dimitrov faces Alexei Popyrin in the US Open first round on hard courts, with both players ranked in the low 130s after challenging 2026 seasons. Dimitrov, a 35-year-old former world No. 3 and 2019 US Open semifinalist, advanced via qualifying with a walkover before his scheduled third-round match, showing improved rhythm on recent grass but holding a 12-16 record overall amid lingering injury recovery from a pectoral issue. Popyrin, 27, has endured a steep ranking slide and inconsistent results (roughly 12-26), including mental health breaks and retirements, though his powerful serve has produced tight contests historically. Their head-to-head stands at 2-2, with Dimitrov taking their most recent hard-court meeting in Shanghai 2024; serve and return metrics favor the Bulgarian slightly in recent form, while Popyrin holds an edge in tiebreaks. The matchup remains competitive on a surface suiting both big servers.
