Kei Nishikori, the 36-year-old former world No. 4 and 2014 US Open finalist now ranked outside the top 400, brings extensive Grand Slam experience and strong motivation in what he has announced as his final season before retirement. The Japanese veteran, granted a qualifying wild card, has advanced through his opening two rounds in straight or three-set wins on the hard courts at Flushing Meadows. He faces 20-year-old compatriot Rei Sakamoto, a rising player with a career-high ranking near No. 148, multiple Challenger titles, and recent straight-set victories in the same qualifying draw. Sakamoto’s height, serve power, and current form contrast with Nishikori’s injury history and age, creating a matchup where experience and crowd support compete against youth and athleticism in the third round of qualifying.
