Recent Houthi threats to close the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, issued in April 2026 amid escalating U.S. and Israeli tensions with Iran, represent the key driver elevating shipping risk premiums and oil price volatility. The 18-mile-wide chokepoint handles roughly 12% of global oil trade and significant container volumes; while transits continue without formal blockade, insurers have hiked war-risk premiums and carriers maintain partial rerouting around the Cape of Good Hope, sustaining elevated freight rates. This follows the October 2025 ceasefire that eased prior attacks, yet renewed warnings tie closure directly to further Hormuz disruptions or Gulf state involvement. Traders monitor upcoming diplomatic and military developments, including potential FOMC impacts from energy cost spikes, as market-implied odds price in elevated but not certain disruption probabilities.
