LeBron James has informed the Lakers he will enter free agency and play his 24th NBA season elsewhere in 2026-27, while the franchise fully guaranteed Bronny James’ $2.3 million contract, anchoring the second-year guard in Los Angeles. This split creates balance around the 50% mark, as traders weigh LeBron’s long-stated preference for father-son teammates against his departure and the difficulty of engineering a trade or reunion elsewhere. Recent roster moves, including Bronny’s emergence off the bench late last season, keep open slim paths via free-agency sign-and-trade maneuvers or LeBron returning to a contending roster that could acquire his son. Injury recovery, contract negotiations, and team fit will determine whether the pair shares an active roster next season.
