Incumbent Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni holds the leading position in trader consensus for Italy’s next prime minister, supported by her center-right coalition’s record as the second-longest-serving government since the republic’s founding and her party’s consistent polling lead ahead of elections due by December 2027. Recent developments include a March 2026 referendum defeat on judicial reform that highlighted coalition strains and mobilized opposition voters, alongside ongoing pressures from energy costs, migration policy, and foreign relations. This has elevated alternative center-left figures such as Genoa Mayor Silvia Salis and Democratic Party leader Elly Schlein, who benefit from primary discussions and positioning as potential unifying challengers in a proportional system likely to require post-election negotiations.
