Both Essendon and Richmond endured dismal 2026 seasons, finishing 18th (2-21) and 17th (3-20) respectively amid chronic injuries, poor percentages, and heavy defeats that left their ladders positions nearly identical. Richmond’s slight edge in wins and greater experience among veterans like Nick Vlastuin and Toby Nankervis underpins the narrow 52% implied probability, while Essendon’s young core—including Nate Caddy and emerging midfielders—plus new coach Mark McVeigh’s appointment create comparable upside. Persistent soft-tissue issues, list turnover, and the need for further development on both sides sustain the competitive balance, with any meaningful shift likely hinging on pre-season recoveries, draft outcomes, or early 2027 form.
