Matthew Garwood, the incumbent since winning the 2023 by-election, leads trader pricing at 53.5% ahead of lower-priced names including Paul Mallett at 37%, Rose Diamond at 18.5%, Kyle Barrett at 16.5%, and Tim Walker at 10%. Nominations for the October 2026 postal-ballot contest open in days, leaving the full field uncertain and supporting broad 50% levels across many listed candidates. Recent council turbulence, including 2025 resignations, a July 2026 defamation ruling against Garwood, and public clashes with sitting councillors, has kept the market tight by highlighting both incumbency advantages and potential vulnerabilities in a compulsory-voting system that favors broad name recognition and independent positioning.
