Liudmila Samsonova entered as the #18 seed with superior recent hard-court form and a powerful baseline game tailored to Australian Open conditions, positioning her as trader consensus favorite against lower-ranked Laura Siegemund. Siegemund, a 38-year-old veteran ranked around No. 48, carried injury concerns after retiring early in Adelaide and a 0-1 hard-court record to start 2026, though their even 2-2 head-to-head—including Siegemund's prior wins on the surface—hinted at upset potential from her tactical resilience and doubles-honed net skills. No late withdrawals or weather issues altered the first-round matchup on Melbourne Park's outdoor hard courts.
