Taro Daniel enters US Open qualifying as the clear favorite against American teenager Andrew Johnson, leveraging his veteran experience, current ATP ranking near 186, and strong recent form that includes a Challenger title in Bratislava and a semifinal run in Quebec City. The Japanese player has navigated multiple Grand Slam qualifying draws and main-draw appearances in prior years, giving him a decisive edge on hard courts against a 16-year-old with a career-high ranking near 789 and limited professional exposure beyond ITF and junior events. Johnson’s rapid rise, highlighted by early ITF titles, adds upset potential but faces the typical hurdles of inexperience at this stage. Surface familiarity and match fitness further support trader consensus favoring the higher-ranked competitor in the opening round.
