The St. Louis Cardinals (68-69) enter any matchup against the Colorado Rockies (52-84) as the clearer favorite, sitting 4.5 games back in the NL wild card race while the Rockies remain 20 games out in the NL West. St. Louis has taken two of the last three series meetings, including a home split in mid-August, and benefits from a deeper rotation despite recent bullpen and infield injuries. Colorado’s pitching staff is thin after multiple starters landed on the IL, including Kyle Freeland and others with elbow or shoulder issues, forcing reliance on less reliable arms in a hitter-friendly Coors Field environment. The Cardinals’ recent skid (3-7 in their last 10) and upcoming road trip to Los Angeles precede the early September series in Denver, where rest, travel, and bullpen usage could influence outcomes.
