Trader consensus heavily favors no magnitude 9.0+ earthquake before 2027, driven by the extreme rarity of such megathrust events on the moment magnitude scale. USGS records show the most recent examples occurred in 2004 (Sumatra) and 2011 (Tohoku), consistent with global estimates of one to three magnitude 9+ quakes per century and multi-century recurrence intervals in subduction zones. Ongoing monitoring reveals only typical background seismicity without precursors like unusual strain accumulation or foreshock sequences that might signal an imminent rupture. While an unexpected event remains possible in high-risk areas such as the Cascadia or Japan trenches, the short remaining timeframe and absence of elevated activity support the strong market-implied odds.
