Carlos Alcaraz returns to singles action for the first time since April after a right wrist injury sidelined him from the French Open and Wimbledon, making his 2026 US Open title defense opener against Roman Safiullin a key test of match fitness on outdoor hard courts. The defending champion and No. 2 seed holds a 1-1 head-to-head with the Russian, who defeated him indoors in Paris in 2023 before Alcaraz prevailed on clay at the 2024 Olympics. Safiullin, ranked 98th after a strong Wimbledon run to the fourth round, brings an aggressive serve and baseline game that could exploit any lingering rust or movement limitations in best-of-five sets. Trader consensus reflects Alcaraz's superior talent and experience but accounts for the extended absence and Safiullin's ability to push early sets.
