Maryland athletic director Jim Smith publicly committed in November 2025 to retain head coach Mike Locksley for the 2026 season while increasing NIL and talent-acquisition resources. Despite the Terps’ 4-6 finish, six-game losing streak, and ongoing Big Ten struggles that produced an 11th straight sub-.500 conference record, the school opted against a change. Locksley’s contract runs through 2027, and firing him would have triggered a buyout exceeding $13 million. The decision preserves continuity for a young roster that previously produced three consecutive bowl wins, reflecting institutional backing that shapes trader expectations for stability heading into next year.
