Pablo Carreño Busta enters the 2026 National Bank Open first round against Valentin Royer on Montreal hard courts as the more experienced player with stronger recent Grand Slam results, including a fourth-round run at the French Open and a second-round appearance at Wimbledon. The Spaniard holds a 9-11 record in 2026 after recovering from prior elbow issues, while the 25-year-old Frenchman sits at No. 78 with a 3-16 mark this season despite a career-high ranking of No. 54 earlier in the year. Royer has yet to secure consistent wins on the main tour, creating a matchup where Busta’s veteran serving and clay-to-hard transition stand out against the younger player’s limited hard-court momentum. No prior head-to-head exists, and both enter after limited pre-tournament preparation.
