Historical rarity of magnitude 9.0+ events, which occur globally roughly once every 25–50 years based on USGS records since 1900, underpins the 95.5% market-implied probability of “No” through the end of 2026. Only a handful have struck in the instrumental era (1960 Chile 9.5, 1964 Alaska 9.2, 2004 Sumatra 9.1, 2011 Tohoku 9.1), with the most recent M8.8 Kamchatka quake in 2025 falling short on the moment-magnitude scale. Subduction-zone megathrusts capable of such ruptures exhibit long recurrence intervals and no current signs of accelerated strain accumulation or foreshock sequences that would elevate near-term odds. While an unexpected full-margin Cascadia or Nankai event remains theoretically possible, the compressed four-month window leaves little room for the tectonic conditions required.
