The Pittsburgh Pirates (65-71) and St. Louis Cardinals (68-68) meet for the opener of a three-game NL Central series at Busch Stadium, with both clubs well out of playoff contention behind Milwaukee. Pirates right-hander Jared Jones (2-5, 4.76 ERA) faces Cardinals left-hander Quinn Mathews (0-2, 6.43 ERA) in a matchup that favors Pittsburgh’s starter, though St. Louis holds a 5-2 edge in the season series and home-field advantage. Key absences include Pirates catcher Endy Rodriguez (hip surgery) and infielder Konnor Griffin (finger), plus Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn (thumb) and multiple pitchers on the injured list. Alec Burleson’s 13-game hitting streak and Jordan Walker’s recent power provide Cardinals offense, while Pittsburgh has posted a .201 team batting average over its last 10 games. Trader consensus reflects a near-even contest shaped by the pitching edge versus home/series history.
