Both the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds enter their August 17 matchup at Great American Ball Park with sub-.500 records near the middle of the NL Central standings, limiting playoff implications for either side. The Cardinals hold a modest edge in recent road performance and run production, while Cincinnati’s offense ranks near the bottom of the league in batting average. Key Reds injuries, including Spencer Steer on the 10-day IL with a wrist issue and Hunter Greene sidelined long-term following Tommy John surgery, have strained the lineup and rotation depth. Inconsistent pitching staffs on both clubs have produced elevated ERAs this season, making bullpen usage and probable starters like Andre Pallante central variables. Trader consensus reflects these modest Cardinals advantages alongside historical head-to-head trends in recent Cincinnati visits.
