LeBron James enters 2026 unrestricted free agency after exercising his 2025-26 player option, positioning the Lakers as the clear frontrunner at 59% in trader pricing due to Bird rights that enable a near-max or structured deal unavailable to most suitors. Recent reports confirm James and agent Rich Paul will request maximum salary from Los Angeles, where family ties, eight prior seasons, and a championship legacy remain strong anchors despite the franchise's pivot toward building around Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves. The Knicks, Warriors, and Cavaliers sit in the low-20s as the next tier, reflecting speculation around New York's market appeal, a potential Curry pairing in Golden State via the mid-level exception, and a nostalgic return to Cleveland. Broader interest from a reported 10-12 teams has not shifted pricing materially, as cap constraints and LeBron's age limit realistic alternatives.
