The 2027 Best Documentary Feature race remains wide open in August 2026, with trader consensus pricing a large field near even odds because most eligible titles have yet to screen or build sustained momentum. Alex Gibney’s “Musk,” slated for a Venice premiere and October theatrical release, has drawn the most early attention thanks to its high-profile subject, Gibney’s Oscar-winning track record, and distributor plans that include a Best Picture push—an unprecedented step for a nonfiction film. A24’s “Nuisance Bear” and other festival-bound entries such as “One in a Million” and “Once Upon a Time in Harlem” sit just behind, reflecting modest early buzz rather than decisive precursor results. Late-2026 festival debuts, guild shortlists, and critical consensus will likely reorder the field before voting begins.
