Mertens and Shnaider enter the National Bank Open women's doubles round of 32 on hard courts in Toronto as the stronger pairing, anchored by Mertens' proven doubles pedigree—including her 2026 Australian Open title—and Shnaider's rising trajectory across surfaces. Jiang and Wu bring recent WTA doubles success, including multiple 2025 titles together, but face a matchup against more consistent top-level execution and greater combined experience. Recent tournament form favors the Belgian-Russian duo, with no reported injuries or withdrawals altering the field. Hard-court pace and potential fatigue from singles schedules could influence movement and net play, though both teams have adapted well historically to North American conditions. The outcome hinges on serving reliability and return pressure in what projects as a competitive early-round encounter.
