Daniil Medvedev enters the Winston-Salem Open second round as the top seed and 2018 champion with a first-round bye, facing American wildcard Martin Damm on hard courts. The 30-year-old Russian brings a 31-14 record in 2026, two titles earlier in the season, and extensive hard-court experience despite recent losses to Botic van de Zandschulp in Toronto and Brandon Nakashima in Cincinnati. Damm, ranked around No. 92 after a rapid climb, won his opening match and reached the Wimbledon second round this year, but faces a significant gap in match toughness and ATP-level results. Medvedev’s path serves as targeted US Open preparation following his decision to skip mixed doubles, while Damm’s left-handed serve and height present stylistic variables in a matchup where the veteran’s consistency typically dictates outcomes on this surface.
