Carlos Alcaraz opens his 2026 US Open title defense against Roman Safiullin in the first round on hard courts in a best-of-five match, marking the Spaniard’s first singles appearance since a right wrist injury sidelined him in April. Alcaraz, the No. 2 seed and defending champion, skipped the French Open and Wimbledon while recovering, and recent mixed doubles play showed visible rust on serve and movement. Safiullin, ranked No. 98, brings recent momentum from a Wimbledon fourth-round run that included upsets over higher-ranked players, plus a 1-1 head-to-head record featuring an indoor hard-court win against Alcaraz in 2023. Trader consensus reflects Alcaraz’s superior talent and experience as the dominant implied probability, tempered by uncertainty over his physical readiness after the extended absence and the physical demands of a five-set Grand Slam opener.
