Mahomes' recovery from the torn ACL and LCL that ended his 2025 season remains the central driver behind the market split, with traders assigning him just a 61% chance of starting Week 1 amid ongoing training-camp monitoring and a precautionary absence from the preseason opener. The Chiefs traded for Justin Fields in March specifically to serve as the primary backup, giving him a 41.9% implied probability if Mahomes' clearance is delayed. Mahomes' June contract extension through 2033 reinforces long-term commitment but does not alter the short-term health timeline. Depth options like Minshew, Oladokun, and Flacco sit at single-digit or lower odds, reflecting their roles behind the top two. Recent camp reports show Mahomes progressing but with reps carefully managed ahead of the regular-season opener.

If the Chiefs do not name a single player as the starting quarterback, the market will resolve based on the player who takes the most snaps at quarterback during their first offensive drive of the game. If multiple players take the same number of snaps on the Chiefs’ first offensive drive, the market will resolve to the player who took the first snap at quarterback.
This market may not resolve before the start of the Chiefs’ Week 1 regular season game.
The resolution sources for this market will be official information from the NFL (NFL.com); however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.
