NOAA's August 2026 update maintains a below-normal Atlantic hurricane outlook, citing a developing strong El Niño that increases vertical wind shear and stabilizes the atmosphere, suppressing tropical cyclone intensification. As of mid-August, only three named storms (Arthur, Bertha, Cristobal) have formed—all tropical storms—with zero hurricanes recorded, well below the 1991-2020 average pace. Forecasters project 2-6 hurricanes for the full season (June-November), with the peak period ahead but limited by these conditions. Trader sentiment splits between 1-3 and 4-6 outcomes because model runs show variability in El Niño strength and any late-season steering patterns or reduced shear that could allow one or two additional systems to reach 74 mph winds before November 30.

If there is no storm categorized as a hurricane in the Atlantic during the specified timeframe this market will resolve to "0".
A hurricane is a tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 74 mph or greater (Category 1 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale), as described at https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutsshws.php.
This market may resolve based on the initial NHC advisory reporting a qualifying hurricane regardless of any later advisory, retraction, best-track revision, or reanalysis that revises that storm's intensity downward. The official count will be determined by the NHC (nhc.noaa.gov) advisories.
