Incumbent Democrat Bennie Thompson secured the nomination in the March 10, 2026, Mississippi 2nd District Democratic primary, defeating challengers including attorney Evan Turnage, while Republican Ron Eller won his party's primary, setting up the November 3 general election matchup. Trader consensus at 85% for Democrats reflects the district's solidly Democratic rating by the Cook Political Report, driven by its majority-Black electorate and Thompson's long history of double-digit victories, often exceeding 65% of the vote. Recent discussions around potential Republican-led redistricting efforts have prompted Thompson's vocal opposition, but no changes have materialized, sustaining the status quo favoring the incumbent in this safe seat.
