Incumbent Democrat Josh Gottheimer holds a commanding position in New Jersey's 5th congressional district ahead of the November 2026 general election. The northern New Jersey seat, covering parts of Bergen and Sussex counties, carries a modest Democratic lean reflected in its Cook Partisan Voting Index, and Gottheimer secured 54.6 percent in 2024. He faced no primary opposition after the June 2026 contest, while Republican nominee Sean Kirrane has limited fundraising and visibility. Forecasters rate the race Solid D or Safe D, consistent with the district's recent voting patterns and the incumbent's substantial campaign resources. A national Republican wave, late scandal, or unusually strong challenger performance could narrow the margin, though structural and resource advantages favor the Democratic nominee.
