Federal prosecutors indicted the Southern Poverty Law Center in April 2026 on 11 counts of wire fraud, false statements to a bank, and conspiracy to commit money laundering, alleging the organization used donor funds to pay informants embedded in extremist groups between 2014 and 2023. The SPLC entered a not guilty plea, filed a motion to dismiss the case as vindictive prosecution, and sought sanctions against DOJ attorneys. A federal judge in Alabama recently denied the dismissal request, allowing the case to advance. With trial scheduled for October 2026 in the Middle District of Alabama, traders appear to weigh the strength of the indictment and procedural setbacks against the organization's defenses when assessing the likelihood of a guilty outcome this year.
