Republican incumbent John McGuire enters the November 3, 2026, general election as the clear frontrunner in Virginia's 5th Congressional District after defeating primary challenger Melanie Lucero by a wide margin on August 4. The central Virginia seat carries a Republican partisan lean, reflected in Donald Trump's 12-point margin there in 2024 and Cook Political Report's Solid Republican rating. McGuire's prior 2024 victory and name recognition provide structural advantages in a district where Republican candidates have prevailed in recent cycles. Democratic nominee Tom Perriello, who won his August 4 primary, faces the challenge of shifting the electorate in a contest rated as safely Republican by most forecasters, though fundraising and turnout in rural and suburban counties could influence final margins.
