Geopolitical tensions, including volatility in the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing conflicts involving Iran, have lifted Brent crude above $100 per barrel as of mid-September 2026, driving the national average regular gasoline price to $4.44–$4.47 per gallon according to AAA data through September 18. This marks a rise of roughly 16 cents week-over-week and more than $1.20 year-over-year, with refining disruptions and strong seasonal demand amplifying the increase. State-level averages reflect these pressures, with the lowest readings in Indiana, Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana hovering near $3.92–$3.94—still above the $3.75 threshold. Market-implied odds for any state dipping below that level in the near term hinge on potential supply relief from eased Middle East tensions or inventory builds, though current fundamentals point to sustained elevation absent major policy or weather shifts.
