Recent yen interventions by Japanese authorities have capped USD/JPY near 158 after brief spikes above 160 in early May 2026, underscoring official sensitivity to excessive depreciation. The Federal Reserve’s decision to hold the federal funds rate at 3.50–3.75 percent amid Middle East-driven oil price pressures and elevated inflation has widened the policy gap relative to the Bank of Japan, which left rates unchanged yet signaled a possible June hike to address upside inflation risks. Traders are monitoring the narrowing interest-rate differential, upcoming FOMC and BOJ meetings, and U.S. CPI releases for clues on whether the pair sustains its range-bound behavior or retests higher levels through year-end.
