Persistent interest rate differentials between the Federal Reserve and Bank of Japan continue to anchor USD/JPY near 159 as of mid-August 2026, with the pair testing the 160 psychological level amid limited follow-through from recent joint interventions. Traders focus on the pace of BoJ normalization—markets price potential hikes in September or October—versus the Fed’s gradual easing path, which keeps real yield advantages favoring the dollar. Recent CPI and labor data releases have reinforced expectations for measured policy shifts, while yen weakness reflects ongoing fiscal pressures and import costs. Key near-term catalysts include upcoming BoJ and FOMC decisions plus inflation prints that could alter rate differential projections and trigger volatility around key thresholds.
