Recent U.S. inflation and payrolls data have revived expectations for a potential Federal Reserve rate hike in September, supporting the dollar and keeping USD/JPY near 153.5 after July peaks above 163. The Bank of Japan’s ongoing normalization, with its policy rate at 1% and market-implied odds favoring further 25-basis-point moves, narrows the yield differential that has long favored yen carry trades. Coordinated intervention by Japanese authorities has capped recent upside, while upcoming CPI, PPI, and central bank communications will shape near-term volatility. Traders price the pair’s path against historical ranges and policy divergence rather than directional certainty.
