Pawel Pawlikowski’s Fatherland has surged to the top of the Palme d’Or market after its May 15 world premiere drew a sustained standing ovation and early critical praise for its disciplined postwar drama and Sandra Hüller’s lead performance. With Park Chan-wook presiding over a jury that often rewards auteur control and historical depth, traders see the film’s recent momentum as the key differentiator against Na Hong-jin’s more speculative sci-fi thriller Hope, which still lacks a screening. The race remains tight because several other established names—Hamaguchi, Zvyagintsev, Mungiu—have yet to screen, leaving room for late momentum shifts once full reviews and jury deliberations begin.
